              Mary is head over heals in love with her husband. She waits for him to come. She                knows his steps. She has everything prepared for him. She becomes excited when he          comes in.

2.       How can you tell that something is disturbing Patrick?
He drinks his drink in one swallow. He seems distant. He answered her abruptly and with short answers.
3.       What can you tell about Mary's relationship with her husband from the dialogue between them before he delivers her the news?
She loves him deeply. She hovers and serves him foot.
He, on the other hand, does not react. You don't feel the love emanating from him

1.       What is Mary’s plan? What is the motivation for this plan?
Mary's plan is to build an alibi in order to protect her unborn baby life.
If she is caught  she might be executed, Her plan is to rehearse,  go to the groceries pretended everything is alright  by smiling and being happy.

2.        Why is it important to cover up what she had done?
Murderers are executed and she wasn't sure what would happen to her unborn baby. Therefore she couldn't take the chance. It's matter of life of death.


3.       What is Mary doing upstairs, in the bedroom?
She is rehearsing what to say to the grocer, because she must act naturally.


4.       Why is Mary talking so much and giving so much information?
She is pretending everything is fine, that her husband is alive and he is waiting for her.

5.       Why was she humming when she entered the kitchen?
She wanted everything to be as natural possible and therefore hopefully deceive the police easily

Complete the summary of part III with one of the following words.

When she came back from the grocer and found her husband lying dead on the floor, all her old love and 1 longing.. for him sprang out. She knelt down beside him and started to cry her 2 heart out. Then 3 sobbing. loudly , she called the police station, and soon two policemen she knew came. After briefly telling them her story, Noonan, one of the men, discovered the small patch of congealed 4 blood on Patrick's head. He asked for more professional help from the station to check the           5 corpse . Mary was asked again a lot of questions, but she was always treated 6 kindly . Then a detective was sent to interrogate the grocer, but he came back reporting that Mary had 7 acted perfectly normal and stressing the impossibility of her committing the murder.
During all this time, while the policemen were looking for the 8 weapon – a heavy blunt instrument probably, Mary sat in the same chair, refusing to move and claiming she wasn't feeling well.
Time passed and the night came when one of the policemen reminded her that her oven was still on. It was then that Mary asked the men to do her a small 9 favor. and eat the supper she had prepared for her late husband. Patrick, her claimed, "would never forgive her if she allowed men to remain in his house without being offered decent 10 hospitality"


UNDERSTANDING PART III
1.       Do the police seem to suspect that Mary might be a murderer? How can we tell?
No, they didn't. They talked to the grocer who gave her a good alibi.
Secondly, she was the wife of an officer whom they knew well.

2.       Other than the fact that she says she feels sick why else does Mary want to stay in the room with the police?
She wants to stay in the room so she can hear what they are saying and what they think happened.



3.       Why do the police think the weapon should be "right under their noses"?
The weapon was considered to the heavy, blunt metal which would be hard to carry away. 

Sometimes an attacker will just drop the weapon and run.


4.       Why do the police agree to Mary's request to eat?
Mary manipulated them into eating the lamb. She used her husband as a reason for them to do so. In addition, the lamb would go to waste.




Analysis and Interpretation for "Lamb to the Slaughter"

1) What point of view is “Lamb to the Slaughter” told from and why is this important? 



The story is told from the point of view of Mary Maloney.

The reader knows, therefore, what Mary knows, except for the reason why Patrick leaves Mary, the reader sympathizes more with Mary.


2) Why does Mary insist the police eat the leg of lamb? Which HOTS did you choose to answer this question?

Mary asks the detective to eat the lamb. She had prepared for her husband, because it is the weapon that was used to kill her husband.
By eating the lamb, they have destroy the evidence.
It also discourages from thinking it is the weapon.


3) What influence does Mary’s pregnancy have on the story?

Firstly, it helps understand just what her husband is doing - the idea of leaving a pregnant wife.

Secondly, the police don't suspect her.

Finally, the reader can understand the instinct of a mother protecting her unborn child.


4) We are not told what Patrick exactly to Mary; why not?

It shows us that Mary may be disoriented and detached

Secondly, it allows the reader to interpret his reason and her actions.



5) What are the themes of the story?

1)People do not know what they are capable of until they are put the test. It was unthinkable that a woman so much in love with her husband could kill him so cold-bloody.

2) Betrayal is a theme in this story.

There is a husband leaving his wife, probably for another woman. There is the housewife Mary, who kills him, Mary also lies and plans an alibi, Mary thereby deceiving the police.

3) Control is an illusion. The police think they will catch the criminal. The husband thinks he can leave without there being a fuss.



6) What is the climax or turning point in the story?

The first climax is when Mary kills Patrick with the leg of lamb.
The main climax occurs when the detectives are closest to discovering the murder weapon and Marry has to keep from getting caught.

7) What is the origin and the meaning of the title?

A lamb is a weak animal, and follows others.
The origin of the title is found in the Bible and refers to going innocently into a dangerous of life threatening situation.

In this case, the lamb is actually a murder weapon. (It was slaughtered to actually be used to kill a person).





8) Who is the lamb? (innocent,pure,unaware of impending doom)

1) Patrick is the lamb, because he innocently believed he could leave her without any repercussions.
2) Mary, in the beginning, was meek and subservient before she killed her husband.

9)  What is the dramatic irony in the story?


The policeman are searching for the weapon, and yet, it's right under noses.
It is actually under their noses, in their mouths.


10) Whom do you feel sympathy for, Mary or Patrick and explain why.
